After four years of online and mobile operations, BEM | books & more, the nation’s first Black food bookstore, is preparing to open a brick & mortar community institution to launch products in collaboration with artists and makers, and serve as a home for scholarship about foodways of the African diaspora.
Brooklyn Packers, a Black-led worker cooperative anchoring the regional food system, and hear worker cooperative about how a current effort to acquire their commercial location is a critical move in their hub-and-spoke NYS agriculture distribution work. The Working World, a member of Seed Commons, will join us to discuss how cooperatives and the solidarity economy are being resourced with their non-extractive financing, and where more collaboration is needed to scale up impact.
A private project briefing and informal discussion will follow.
We will then move to the Bluestocking Bookstore, via public transportation to hear from multiple employee owned NY based businesses working with New York City Network of Worker Cooperatives NYC NoWC..
